A perfectly straight and even smile has become part of a beauty standard today that we see everywhere, from movie stars to social media influencers. If you’re like many others who have a space between their front teeth, also known as a diastema, this could leave you feeling self-conscious or unworthy. Thankfully, cosmetic dentistry can help! Keep reading to learn 3 ways your dentist can boost your confidence by addressing that pesky gap.
Method #1: Porcelain Veneers
These thin shells are made of durable porcelain and are affixed to the front of your tooth to hide and resolve issues like small gaps, chips, discoloration, and more. Not only that, but they can be customized to match your natural teeth so no one will notice a difference.
There is prep work required so if you’re looking for a 100% non-invasive solution, this might not be your top choice. For them to fit correctly, your dentist must remove a thin layer of the protective enamel of your teeth. They’ll numb the area first so that you don’t feel any discomfort, then use a special tool to gently whittle it down. Then they take impressions of your teeth to send to a lab for your customized veneers to be created.
Your dentist will then position them over your front teeth to eliminate the opening between them.
Method #2: Lumineers
For those who already have tooth sensitivity or aren’t open to removing enamel from their teeth, Lumineers might be a better fit. These are similar to veneers but thinner, so they’ll sit flush against your teeth. That means it’s not necessary to pare down your enamel. Lumineers do tend to be more fragile than porcelain veneers, but they can still be used effectively to close the gap in your pearly whites!
Method #3: Invisalign
If you want to shift your teeth into the correct placement to close the space, instead of covering it with veneers, then talk to your dentist about Invisalign! The transparent aligners work as well as braces but are far more discreet. They’re made from clear plastic and fit snuggly over your teeth to gently push them into their ideal positions.
You won’t have to worry about any dietary restrictions because you simply remove the aligners to eat or drink, and then replace them. Also, they won’t draw as much attention as traditional metal braces, so you’ll be able to feel confident about your appearance throughout treatment.
Everyone’s oral health is different, so only your dentist can help you decide on the method that works best for you. Once you decide on a treatment plan, you’ll be on your way to having the beautifully even teeth you deserve. That’s certainly worth smiling about!
