If you’ve ever experienced the throbbing, sharp pain of a toothache, you know that it can be very distressing. In fact, many times, the pain can make it hard to make good decisions! This is why having a plan in place and knowing where to go is important for finding relief. But should you go to the emergency room at a hospital, or call your dentist? Well, it depends! Continue reading to learn when you might need the services of one place or the other in case of a dental emergency.
What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?
Dental emergencies are urgent dental issues that require immediate attention to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, or save a tooth. Severe toothaches, knocked-out teeth, cracked or fractured teeth, and oral infections with swelling or fever are all great examples. Many times, however, the amount of pain and damage is the only thing you have to work with. In some cases, it may not be clear where to turn.
When Should You Visit the ER?
Going to the ER is never something to be taken lightly, but sometimes it’s the best course of action when dealing with a dental emergency. Here’s when you may need to go to the hospital:
- Broken Facial Bones: If you have a dislocated or fractured jawbone, the emergency room has the right tools and equipment to set and mend it.
- Deep Lacerations: A severe cut in or around your mouth that won’t stop bleeding is certainly a cause to visit the ER. Remember to put pressure on the wound as you make your way there.
- Severe Infection: Are you experiencing symptoms like fever, chills, or swelling in your face or neck? An emergency room can quickly treat the symptoms and keep you stable with antibiotics. However, you’ll still need to see your dentist to have the tooth treated.
When Should You See Your Dentist?
Your dentist has specialized equipment that can help them treat the underlying causes of many dental emergencies. Here’s when you should see them:
- Broken, Cracked, or Aching Tooth: Small cracks and chips in teeth can become infected, causing painful throbbing in teeth. Your dentist can treat them while preserving their structure.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: When a tooth is avulsed (knocked-out) it requires specialized knowledge to re-implant it. Your dentist can put it back in its socket and make sure it doesn’t come out again.
- Lost or Broken Restoration: A hospital would have no idea what to do about a broken or lost dental crown or filling. So, head to your dentist whenever this happens!
Understanding when a dental emergency can be treated by your dentist versus an emergency room staff will save you stress. If you’re ever in doubt, call your dentist first. They can help you assess your situation and give you guidance!
