Did you know that experts have estimated that about 42.46 million Americans will have dentures by the end of 2024? Not only that but it’s believed they will continue to gain popularity with the country’s aging population. Despite this, several myths about these restorations continue to propagate. Unfortunately, these falsehoods might keep some people from receiving prosthetics that can rebuild their mouth’s appearance and functionality to improve their daily quality of life.

Continue reading to learn about three rumors about dentures to help you make an informed decision regarding your smile!

Myth #1: I Won’t Need to Visit the Dentist Anymore

Many patients with full dentures assume that because they have no natural teeth remaining, there’s no need to schedule routine checkups with their dentist. However, nothing could be further from the truth! Although your new teeth can’t get cavities or gum disease, bacteria from your mouth and your meals can form plaque on their surfaces. From there, they can penetrate your connective tissues and cause disease that can eventually impact your jawbone if left unaddressed.

Maintaining consistent dental hygiene habits is imperative to prevent potential problems, regardless of how many teeth go missing. You should remove your dentures twice daily to wash all sides with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap or a special cleanser. You should also visit your dentist every six months so they can catch and address any areas of concern, like inflamed gums, before they can progress.

Myth #2: They Are Unreliable

If you’ve hesitated to get dentures because you’re scared they’ll inevitably fall out at an inopportune time, you’re not alone. If they don’t fit well, they can indeed become loose or dislodged, but investing in a quality prosthetic helps keep this from happening. Though you might pay more for teeth made from more durable materials, it can save you money in the long run because they’re less likely to need repairs or relining as frequently.

Furthermore, several types of denture adhesives like creams, powders, and glues can help your restoration form a tighter bond, making it more likely to remain put.

Myth #3: They Will Look Awkward

It’s normal to wonder whether your new teeth will look and feel bulky or unnatural. Thankfully, with ongoing developments in dental technology, techniques, and materials, dentures today are more lifelike than ever. The base is usually made from customizable acrylic that can be printed, carved, or molded to look like your natural gum tissues. Plus, the teeth are typically created with porcelain or resin that can be color-matched to your natural shade and reflect light like enamel.

If you’re still unsure whether dentures are right for you, the best way to find out is to schedule a consultation with your dentist!
