Do it yourself or “DIY” projects can be a lot of fun. Whether you’re replacing a few floor tiles, planting your own vegetable garden, or trying to whiten your teeth at home, there’s a certain satisfaction in accomplishing your goals on your own. But when it comes to your oral health, there are certain things that are best left to the professionals. Here’s D-I-why you should avoid home remedies when whitening your teeth!

Turmeric Teeth Whitening

In recent years, a new trend in DIY teeth whitening has gained popularity on the internet. People on social media claim that brushing your teeth with the spice turmeric can lighten and brighten your smile naturally in the comfort of your own home.

Turmeric is a yellow or orange spice that is part of the ginger family. It originates in Asia and is used in many famous dishes from all over the continent. It has been found to have many health benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and plaque reduction, however there is no proven evidence that it whitens teeth.

Safe, Effective Teeth Whitening Solutions

If you are concerned about the safety of your tooth whitening products, there’s good news. Professional whitening from your dentist has not only been proven safe by the American Dental Association (ADA) but it is also effective at removing stains and lifting discoloration from your teeth.

There are two main options for professional whitening. In-office whitening can lighten the teeth by several shades in about an hour. It uses a special gel that works in combination with a blue light to accelerate your results.

The other option is whitening trays, which can be taken home with the patient and used when it’s convenient for you. Trays do not require the blue light, and results can be seen within about two weeks of use.

Remember, while a delicious addition to many meals, turmeric is not a proven way to whiten your teeth. It is not harmful to your teeth and could even have some health benefits, so if you are a fan, it’s safe to add to your favorite dish. However, if you’re looking for a safe and effective way to remove stains and discoloration, speak to your dentist about a professional whitening treatment today!
