Did the health of your smile take a hit in 2020 and 2021? You’re not alone. Between skipped dental checkups and changes to the daily routine, many Americans (and their dentists) have noticed an uptick in oral health problems over the last two years. Fortunately, there is no time like the present to implement good habits again! With this in mind, here are five smile-related ideas for New Year’s Resolutions.
#1. Brush for Two Full Minutes After Each Meal
Once you start your oral hygiene regimen, do you go on autopilot? If so, then you may unintentionally not be brushing your teeth for the proper amount of time. In fact, although the recommended time is two full minutes, many patients only brush for about 45-60 seconds. To help build this habit, try setting a timer!
#2. Floss Daily
Flossing is an essential component of any oral hygiene regimen; brushing alone only cleans about 66%! Therefore, make sure to add flossing daily to your list of New Year’s resolutions. If you have trouble with traditional floss, try using a water flosser or pre-threaded option.
#3. Cut Back on Sugar
Sugar is one of the biggest culprits of cavities. For this reason, it’s imperative that you cut back on sugary foods and drinks, like soda and candy. Instead, opt for mouth-healthy alternatives, like water and fresh fruit. When you do choose to indulge, rinse your mouth with water and brush your teeth shortly after.
#4. Quit Unhealthy Dental Habits
Smoking, chewing on ice, and using your teeth to open things are all unhealthy dental habits that can compromise your oral health. If you’ve had difficulty in the past, don’t give up! All it takes is one extra try for you to succeed.
#5. Visit Your Dentist Every Six Months
Biannual checkups and cleanings are so much more than a quick sweep for cavities. These routine appointments allow your dental team to thoroughly clean your teeth while simultaneously screening for non-dental problems, like cancer. Get the ball rolling on this New Year’s resolution today by getting your next checkup and cleaning on the calendar!
A fresh start can inspire all sorts of positive changes, from quitting smoking to flossing daily. If you need some support on your journey to a healthier smile, don’t hesitate to talk to your dentist!
